Thank you for your interest in becoming a Vocal Planet author. We are pleased to review book proposals that further our mission and are appropriate to our market. The submission procedure for your proposal is outlined below. Please ensure it includes everything requested so that we may determine whether your book is right for Vocal Planet.

1. Familiarize yourself with Vocal Planet.

Vocal Planet publishes books relating to vocal music and choral conducting. Appropriate topics include, but are not limited to: vocal technique (classical and musical theater), diction, choral score analysis, conducting, vocal literature, choral literature, biographical works, choral music education, music and health, and music therapy.

2. Do your homework. Research your topic, the competition, your target audience and market.

Go to Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and visit bookstores and libraries to see what other books have already been published on the subject. Do a search on your proposed working title to make sure it has not already been used. Who is going to buy your book? You must be able to identify your potential readers. Quantify the market potential. How will these readers be reached? Please note that we do not distribute actively through retail bookstores.

3. Compile your book proposal.

Send a proposal only, not a full manuscript. Vocal Planet does not accept handwritten, faxed, disk, web-based or e-mail submissions. Proposals and manuscripts should be computer-printed only and double-spaced. Submissions must include:

  • A cover letter containing your complete contact information, the working title of your project, a summary of the book, the target audience, a competitive analysis of existing books within your subject area, and the project status. Is the book finished? If not, when do you expect to finish it?
  • An outline with chapter titles, subtopics, and a brief synopsis of what each chapter covers.
  • A couple of sample chapters (including the first chapter) and the book's introduction.
  • Samples of illustrations, music, or photographs, if used. Do not send originals; clear photocopies are acceptable.
  • Your bio and qualifications as an author. Send a copy of your current resume or CV, including publishing credits and credentials in the field. Why are you the right person to write this book ?
  • A self-addressed, stamped envelope. We will not return your materials or respond to your query without return postage. If you want to guarantee receipt of your proposal, include a post card or return receipt with your submission.

4. Criteria for manuscript selection

Please do not call our office to discuss your proposal. If we are interested in more information, we will call or e-mail you. It will take us a few weeks to respond to your query. Patience during the process is appreciated. A manuscript selected for publication by Vocal Planet will exhibit the following characteristics:

  • It presents a message we believe in.
  • It is a work that, in our opinion, needs to be published.
  • It is written by a person or persons whom we believe to be qualified to speak with authority on the subject.
  • The book will be marketable and have the potential of selling enough copies to pay its own way.
